Hesitating Door is a unique apparatus that can turn almost any door into one that is neither closed nor open, leaving it in an uncertain position. Once installed, Hesitating Door swings and turns itself at variable speed in an unpredictable pattern. If this door choreography means anything at all, it serves as a reminder that buildings are never empty, even when no human being has entered them. The spaces doors border with contain a spirit of their own – air molecules, a cultural character, or elements beyond human reach – that might exit and return through the door. We can “see” them only by watching the movements of this hesitant, swinging, disobedient door – one that is not yet sure if it wants to let us in.
