Installed in the Tea House, A Time for Everything is a surround sound installation that focuses on the ways in which ancient texts receive repeated interpretation throughout history. The sound work is based on the famous verse in Ecclesiastes, chapter 3: “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” Whispered by the artist, the sounds accelerate rapidly, to the point when the swirling words and syllables become harmony – music. The seemingly out-of-time appearance of the Tea House as a futuristic archaeological artifact illustrates the ideas behind the ancient text. In an act of abstraction, these ideas undergo a transformation process – stripped of their symbolic meaning, words become sounds, providing visitors with a real physical experience.
